Christian St. Croix spent much of his life in working-class labor before emerging as a distinct voice in contemporary American theatre. The first in his family to work in the arts, he builds plays that blend lo-fi, slice-of-life realism with heightened theatricality, shaped by his experience as a queer, Black artist. His breakout play, Monsters of the American Cinema, received the Dominic Orlando Playwriting Prize and the Carlo Annoni Playwriting Prize and was praised by the Los Angeles Times for its “exhilarating freedom” and “capacious empathy.” His plays include We Are the Forgotten Beasts, an O’Neill National Playwrights Conference Finalist, ZACH, praised by The Seattle Times for its “multiple layers,” and We Lovers, described by the San Diego Union-Tribune as “mesmerizing.” His work has been staged by theaters known for championing new work, including ArtsWest Playhouse, Rogue Machine Theatre, Diversionary Theatre, Urbanite Theatre, Kitchen Theatre Company, Know Theatre of Cincinnati and Prologue Theatre.
